Kimberly Benchsky's Approach!
Hello, I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with more than 10 years of experience working with children ages 2 years old through adulthood. I have extensive experience supporting individuals with anxiety, ADHD, adjustment disorder, depression/postpartum depression, grief, trauma, social skills, coping skills, sibling conflict, family interactions, and sensory difficulties. I also have a specialty in assisting clients with autism spectrum disorders. I have worked with children, adolescents, adults, and families in a variety of settings including in-home, community, early learning childcare centers, and office-based. Sometimes life presents us with challenges that are too overwhelming to navigate on our own. This is when therapy may be helpful. In my therapeutic practice I strive to provide my clients with a safe and supportive environment in which the individual may explore the difficulties and challenges confronting him/her. My approach is to offer whatever combination of services best fit my client's needs. This may include individual sessions, parenting sessions, sibling sessions, family sessions, or a mixture of any of the above. For children, I often utilize the play therapy room, which provides a safe, therapeutic environment where I can help them work through whatever difficulties they may be experiencing. I recognize that we are all individuals with unique strengths, experiences, and struggles. I will work collaboratively with you to use those strengths and experiences to develop goals that best meet your needs, and together we will determine ways to achieve them. My initial goal is to understand how you see your difficulties and how they impact your life. We will then identify the changes you want to see happen. Lastly, we will work together to build a relationship that helps you to gain insight and supports change. I use an eclectic approach in treatment to address the specific needs of the client. I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), but also draw from Family Therapy, Behavior Modification, Solution-Focused Therapy, as well as Motivational Interviewing.
Kim's BeliefI am a wife and mother to two young children and can relate to many of the everyday struggles we all face. Working as a private practitioner allows me to combine my passion for assisting others in creating a happy, healthy life, with my belief in an individual’s capacity for growth, using a strength-based model. Together, with some creative counseling, I believe positive change is possible. I look forward to collaborating with you!
Education and Background
I attended Emmanuel College in Boston, MA where I received my undergraduate degree in psychology with a concentration in counseling and health. While there I completed my internship at Franciscan Hospital for Children. Upon graduating, I worked as a residential care counselor at a group home for children with low functioning autism. This sparked my passion for working with individuals on the autism spectrum, and after two years, I decided to further my education. I received my master’s degree at King’s College London, in London, England, where I had the privilege of working with some of the world’s top autism researchers. In the last several years I've worked with a variety of clients including children, adults, and families in multiple settings.
